Sketches from the beach

Sketches from the beach

For as long as I can remember, my family has spent one week during the summer at Edisto Island, South Carolina, a tiny island between Charleston and Savannah.

The beach here is about 5 miles long with rental houses dating back to the 50's. There's a few restaurants, a place to buy fresh seafood, and a grocery store, but that's about it. You vacation here if you love to swim in the ocean and play on the beach.

I just got back from visiting the family at Edisto and I thought I'd share my sketches here.  This recent trip I brought wax pastels and color pencils, but sometimes I bring watercolors and acrylics too. It was so hot, my wax crayons were very soft which made them fun to work as the color poured out.

There's something fleeting and immediate that only happens in a sketchbook for me. I love to capture that quick response. And even better when I work in a medium that's un-erasable!

On other trips I've brought along watercolors, color pencils and mixed media stuff:

My sketches are so important to me and influence a lot of my finished work. Remember these screenprinted patches I had in the shop a while ago? Totally inspired by sketchbook drawings!~

Thanks for reading my post! I hope it inspires you to carry along a sketchbook! and happy beaching!

Thx for the memories! Over 40 years ago, we were stationed at
Parris Island and rented one of those Edisto cabins. Our son was about 2 and it was a magical time.
