In our spare time, Simon and I have been working on large scale screen-printed monoprints. After showing some of these works at CUBE, we were eager to propose a larger show.

For us, this work serves as an extension of our art practice beyond printing fabric yardage. Working collaboratively, we give ourselves a few guidelines to start each piece; such as only using leftover ink from past projects, and using screens around the studio with our large scale repeat patterns ready for yardage printing.

Once we start a piece, deconstruction and play take over and we find ourselves making decisions based on what just happened in the print.

The first piece we started was "Forest Edge: Fall". Our idea was to create the feeling of dappled sunlight on the forest edge, using colors that remind us of fall.

Here's a video of the making of that piece:

As with all projects, the more we worked on these monoprints, the more ideas we had and the more deconstructing of our process went on. Later pieces in the series began to take on larger areas of color, we began printing with open screens and not using our repeat patterns. We became more interested in the "play" aspect of this work, not worrying about the rules we set forth when we began.
