Apparel-Weight Linen!

Apparel-Weight Linen!

We've finally sourced an ethical and sustainable linen base cloth to feel good about! This fabric is a dream to print and just as lovely to sew up!

For this first collection of prints, we've chosen three of our favorite patterns: Meadowlark, Brown Thrasher, and Ginkgo.

We have two base cloth colors to choose from, plus a wild card! :)

This post features two of the patterns and the two base cloth colors we'll be launching on Friday this week!

We wanted to hear from you, our customers, how well the fabric handled and see how the prints draped as garments. We gave a few yards to three testers to let them play and this is what they made and said:

Lizzie:
1. What are you choosing to make with the fabric?
I made the Pilvi Jacket from the book Lotta Jansdotter Everyday Style.
2. How do you like sewing/ironing/working with the fabric?
This fabric was a dream to work with. It held its shape well as I was working with it, and it ironed up nice and crisp. I had to pick out a few seams on my garment, but the fabric didn’t stretch or fray much.
3. Have you washed your finished garment/fabric? How did it do (fade, get softer, etc) ?
I washed the fabric before cutting out my pattern pieces, and it washed up beautifully. (Washed cold and tumbled dried low.) It came out of the dryer so soft! I couldn't stop handling the fabric because it feels so good against my skin. This is the softest, most comfortable linen I've worked with.
4. How do you feel about the print placement on your garment? Do you think the motifs are too big, too small?
I specifically chose the Pilvi Jacket because I thought the print size would be just right for a cropped jacket.
5. What do you think of the weight? Does it work well for your project?
I love this weight! I think it’s perfect for a jacket, pants/shorts, or a structured dress.
6. Are there any other garments/home items you'd like to make with this fabric?
I want to make so many things with this fabric! I’d love to see it in:
-Rose Pants by Made by Rae
-Square Neck Top by Friday Pattern Company
-Kabuki Tee by Paper Theory Pattern
-Tea House Top/Dress by Sew House Seven
-Jily by Ready to Sew

Karen:
1. What are you choosing to make with the fabric?
I made the Purl Soho Cross-Back Apron.
2. How do you like sewing/ironing/working with the fabric?
I LOVED sewing with this! It is a very nice weight, a bit heavier than medium weight linen I have worked with in the past, but has great drape, irons beautifully, but still has that soft wrinkle texture I love about linen. I made too many mistakes while sewing, and had to seam rip a few times, but the fabric held up just fine.
3. Have you washed your finished garment/fabric? How did it do (fade, get softer, etc) ?
I washed (in cold) and dried (in med hot dryer) and it is perfect so far.
4. How do you feel about the print placement on your garment? Do you think the motifs are too big, too small?
For the apron, I really wanted to have it all vertical direction for the bird motifs, but I had no problem cutting with that in mind. Once reason I chose the apron was because I wanted to have long panels to really show off the fabric. For this project the size was just right.
5. What do you think of the weight? Does it work well for your project?
Yes, perfect weight for this. It drapes well, but has some weight so the apron doesn’t slide around and look too sloppy (as I wear this as a “dress” over pants, not as an apron, I really like that quality. I have another linen apron made from a lighter weight linen, and I don't like how light it is and it rides around too much)
6. Are there any other garments/home items you'd like to make with this fabric?
I would love to make a skirt out of this. I think (for me) it would be a bit too heavy for a shirt. But would also make a beautiful Wiksten Haori, or other type of lightweight jacket (Tamarack by Grainline?)

Margaret:
1. What are you choosing to make with the fabric?
I made a sundress
2. How do you like sewing/ironing/working with the fabric?
The fabric was great to work with. It is sturdy and didn't fray excessively. That can be an issue with some linen. It ironed nicely and stayed smooth. It was very easy to work with, and has a very nice drape.
3. Have you washed your finished garment/fabric? How did it do (fade, get softer, etc) ?
I washed the finished garment in warm water and hung it to dry. It kept its shape and bright color. It had the crisp but soft feel that I expect from linen. There was no shrinkage.
4. How do you feel about the print placement on your garment? Do you think the motifs are too big, too small?
The print placement is perfect. Initially, I was concerned about the size of the birds. They seemed a bit large. In the end, they are perfect. I went through several pattern choices to find one that would highlight the print and amount of fabric. I am delighted with how it turned out. I wouldn't change a thing!
5. What do you think of the weight? Does it work well for your project?
The weight of the fabric is lovely. It has an excellent drape and will work well from spring to fall.
6. Are there any other garments/home items you'd like to make with this fabric?
I love this fabric. I can think of many things I could use it for.
MargaretStay tuned for the launch of this new fabric on FRIDAY! And if you subscribe to our newsletter you'll have access to 20% off through Sunday.
